DANBURY–A Danbury based business is joining the fight against Ebola.
The World Health Organization recently purchased two pieces of equipment that use ultraviolet lights from Spectra254, a company that makes products such as ones designed to prevent Hospital Acquired Infections.
Spectra254 is now shipping its machines this week to Ebola-ravaged Sierra Leone to use in disinfecting hospitals and clinics, and the company says they expect the WHO to purchase at least two dozen more in the coming months.
The company is also offering to loan additional units to any American hospitals that have dealt with Ebola scares. In fact, Spectra254 has already loaned this disinfecting equipment to a Dallas hospital. The company’s president will not confirm if it is Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, which treated the United States’ first Ebola patient, Thomas Eric Duncan, who later died.
The company confirms that late Tuesday they received test results from an independent lab in Texas that studied their equipment’s effectiveness in wiping out an Ebola-like viruses. The study showed the equipment killed 99.9 percent of the virus from a distance of 10 feet away.
A number of major hospitals are in negotiations to purchase units, which cost approximately $40,000. However, Spectra254 says some of their competitors' similar machines can run a customer $100,000.
In the future, the company says it sees the opportunity to develop equipment that would serve schools, athletic facilities and commercial and industrial businesses.
