FAIRFIELD–A Sacred Heart University student who was killed after being struck by a car is being honored with a scholarship.

The H.W. Wilson Foundation gifted the school $100,000 for an endowed scholarship in memory of Kaitlyn Doorhy, who was killed while walking near campus just before starting her junior year. One junior student from Long Island with financial need will receive the scholarship each year, with the first likely coming for the 2015-2016 school year.

“We pray for Kaitlyn’s family and hope this gesture can add to the many joyful memories of her extraordinary life,” said Harold Regan, the president of the H.W. Wilson Foundation. The foundation focuses on helping causes that improve the spirit, mind and body of the most people through financial aid. The foundation collaborates with charitable, educational and religious institutions. Regan said the donation was made because the board was saddened by her untimely passing.

A tree was also planed in her honor outside the Chapel of the Holy Spirit on Sacred Heart’s campus by her four roommates. A dedication ceremony was held during family weekend, and 70 of Doorhy’s relatives and friends attended.

“We are very grateful to the H.W. Wilson Foundation for this generous gift in Kaitlyn’s memory,” said Judite Vamvakides, the director of annual giving at SHU. “It will ensure that Kaitlyn is remembered each year and that future students will learn about all that she meant to Sacred Heart.”
