HARTFORD--A candidate for state Senate accused her opponent’s campaign of harassing her with cold calls on Wednesday.

State Rep. Mae Flexer, who is running for the state Senate, said she received more than 50 calls to her cell phone on Monday and Tuesday night, but no one on the other end.

"When it called, I would answer, no one would say anything. Sometimes I'd let it go to voicemail. There would be dead air on my voicemail over and over again,” Flexer said.

Flexer, a Democrat, is running against John French, a Republican, for the 29th Senate District, which covers Brooklyn, Canterbury, Killingly, Mansfield, Putnam, Scotland, Thompson and Windham. Flexer said when she reached out to State Police to investigate the calls police traced them to a voicemail linked to French’s campaign.

"The voicemail said 'French for Senate.' And, I was really disturbed,” she said.

The French campaign released a statement on Wednesday saying that some of the confusion could be due to a campaign robocall which asks constituents to, “press 1 to tell Mae Flexer to stop voting to raise your taxes.” According to the French campaign, if a constituent dials “1” they are redirected to the Flexer campaign, not Mae Flexer’s cell phone.

“We will get to the bottom of who exactly did this, but it was not from this campaign. We will work with Mae to solve this and find the culprit,” the French campaign statement read.

State Police are still investigating.
