Three New Britain police officers who were attempting to execute a felony arrest–for previous injuries to officers–were injured in the process.
The suspect, Richard Moore, 43, was in a parked car on Alexander Road when officers approached him to try and take him into custody for an incident that occurred on Oct. 28. In that case, police found him slumped over the steering wheel in his running car.
An officer reached in and put the car in park, but Moore woke up and put the car back in drive and accelerated away. The officer sustained minor injuries to his arm when it got caught in the vehicle. Moore escaped arrest, but a warrant was issued for two counts of assault on police, reckless driving, interfering with police and operating a motor vehicle under suspicion.
On Thursday, Oct. 30, when police approached his parked car to arrest him he became angry and tried to speed away in his car, again, but this time ended up dragging one of the officers on the ground.
The officer broke free, and then Moore drove the car directly towards two other officers nearby. The officer who was dragged shot at the car, but Moore wasn’t hit by any gunshots, though he did subsequently crash the car into a large rock.
Moore kept resisting arrest, but was subdued and handcuffed. He was treated and released from the hospital from minor injuries he suffered when he crashed into the rock.
The officer who was dragged on the ground was treated for non-life threatening injuries and was released from the hospital. A second officer sustained a fracture, and a third officer is currently being evaluated and treated.
In the process of trying to arrest Moore officers noticed narcotics in his car.
Moore was charged for Thursday’s incident with three counts of assault on police, criminal attempt to commit assault in the first degree, interfering with police, possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics with intent to sell and motor vehicle charges. He was also processed for the charges from the Oct. 28 incident.
