Halloween night we'll be seeing lots of ghosts and goblins.

With all those trick-or-greater roaming streets in search of candy State Police are urging everyone to be extra cautious tonight.

Because Halloween falls on a Friday this year a lot of festivities are expected to take place at night and that puts a large number of party goers on the road the same time as trick-or-treaters.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports children are four times more likely to be struck by a car on Halloween than any other day of the year.

Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that motor vehicle fatalities increase 37 percent when Halloween lands on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

That's what it's so important for drivers to pay more attention as they hit the roads and also for parents to take extra steps in their child's safety.

Below are some friendly reminders from Connecticut State Police for the entire family to follow.

  • Wear bright, light-colored reflective costumes
  • Carry a flashlight
  • Use caution as you visit houses
  • Never enter anyone's house or car for a treat
  • Always go trick-or-treating in a group that includes adults and never go alone
  • Don't let children eat treats until parents inspect all goodies
  • Only collect treats from those you know
  • Always watch for cars as you walk from house to house
  • Do not wear a mask that hinders vision in any way

On top of those tips State Police is also asking parents to check the state sex offender registry list beforehand in order to map out trick-or-treating routes.
