Voters in Connecticut’s 5th district re-elected Democrat Elizabeth Esty to Congress on Tuesday. Her camp said they believe the first-term Congresswoman beat out Republican challenger Mark Greenberg 53 percent to 46 percent.

Esty’s staff members thought the her race would be called sooner in the night than it was.

Greenberg took towns in Litchfield County early in the night, but once numbers poured in from the 5th District’s cities, Esty declared a win.

Cheers erupted inside Coco Key Resort when Esty’s supporters heard the news around 10:20 p.m.

A short time later, Esty took the stage and delivered a victory speech. She thanked her family and campaign volunteers, then discussed her gratitude for the democratic process. She also said she’ll spend her second term focused on “fixing things” and working in a bipartisan matter.

In a interview with Fox CT, Esty said gun control is a top priority for her second term. She currently serves as a vice chair of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force.

Esty said she’ll also fight for jobs.
