Tim Herbst, who is in his third term as first selectmen in Trumbull, said Wednesday that as he was going to his concession speech he thought back to what he is late Trumbull High School football coach, Jerry McDougall, told him.
"He always said to me you always want to leave it all on the field and have no regrets," said Herbst. "And, I'm proud of this campaign because we left it all on the field. And I have no regrets."
Denise Nappier, the four term incumbent as state treasurer, ended up beating Herbst by roughly 5,000 votes in a highly contentious race.
Herbst said he was confident he could have won this race simply because Nappier, 63, has mismanaged the state's $30 billion pension fund. And Herbst says that issue resonated with the voters across the state.
"And the proof of that is how strong we ran in traditionally Democratic towns, in metro Hartford," said Herbst, 34. "Republicans don't traditionally win Wethersfield by 1,000 votes. We won it. We won Cromwell. We won Rocky Hill. We won Glastonbury by 2,700 votes."
Herbst added that it's tough to have success when "your party's candidate for governor loses by 20,000 votes. And, you're placed on the seventh line of the ballot."
