KDVR –  Russian hackers are suspected of breaking into  surveillance cameras and posting the feeds online for anyone to see.

Over 40 were accessible in Hartford alone.

The website, which highlights cameras from across the United States, shows private homes and businesses without the camera owners’ approval. Several media outlets reported the breach on Monday after the website “insecam” posted live feeds online.

Cyber security experts believe it wasn’t difficult for hackers to access the cameras because many users keep generic usernames and passwords.

“They know when you’re leaving the house, and they know when there’s no activity in the house for several days,” said Ray Hutchins, President of Denver Cyber Security.

To protect yourself, experts recommend disconnecting PCs and laptops from internet connections overnight and masking web cameras with tape to prevent someone from seeing a feed without your approval.
