HARTFORD — A historic high in the number of homeless children in America.

A new report Monday details the alarming rise.

The National Center on Family Homelessness reports 2.5 million children in America, about one in every 30, go to sleep without a home of their own each year.

One top of that, from 2012-2013 the number of children experiencing homelessness increased by 8 percent nationally.

The report ranked states based on a composite score on how well each one combats the problem. A one score was the best, 50 the worst.

Overall Connecticut ranked 12; however, the state ranked number one when it came to the extent of child homelessness showing that Connecticut has one of the lowest rates of child homelessness.

The state could work to improve on handling health problems for children who are homeless; Connecticut ranked 27 on that category.

The report shows major causes of homelessness for children are the nation’s high poverty rate, lack of affordable housing and racial disparities.

The report notes effective responses to combat the problem are affordable housing, parenting support for mothers and further research to identify evidence based programs and services for children and families.

The state with the best composite score was Minnesota and Alabama was at the bottom of the list.
