HARTFORD–A former teacher pleaded guilty to a federal child pornography charge in the federal court in Hartford on Tuesday.

Joseph Rajkumar, 44, was charged with one count of attempted receipt of child pornography after having a sexual relationship with a student while he was still a science teacher and adviser for the Science Olympiads team at Miss Porter’s School, a private school for girls in Farmington. He is already in custody after previously pleading guilty in Connecticut state court to sexual assault in the second degree, for which he was sentenced in January to 10 years in prison with his sentence suspended after 18 months. He also has to serve 10 years probation.

In April 2011 Rajkumar and a minor female who was a student at the school became friendly. Rajkumar asked the girl to create an anonymous email account that didn’t have her name attached–he also made one for himself–before the summer break began so that they could communicate. This is against school policy that teachers and students only communicate through a school-sponsored website. Rajkumar asked the girl multiple times to take her shirt off while the two video chatted. Initially she didn’t want to, but she eventually did.

The relationship between Rajkumar and the girl became sexual in November 2011. The two also continued to video chat at least until April 2012, and during these chats Rajkumar made inappropriate comments and pressured the girl to expose herself on camera.

While that relationship continued, Rajkumar began to harass five other girls in the school in person and through text messages. Besides making inappropriate comments, Rajkumar asked at least one other girl to make an anonymous email account so the two could do “naughty things” that were “secret.” Rajkumar asked at least one of these other victims to have a physical relationship.

Rajkumar will be sentenced on Feb. 6, 2015. The minimum sentence is five years imprisonment, while the maximum sentence is 20 years.

Homeland Security Investigations is also investigating the case with the help of Farmington Police.
