You wash your hands to get clean, but it’s the way you dry them that may actually be spreading germs.

British researchers have found that hand dryers could be much worse for spreading germs than paper towels.  They said the dryers that shoot out air at hundreds of miles per hour also seem to be spreading bacteria around the room.   The researchers found 27 times more germs in the air around hand dryers than in the air around paper towel dispensers.

A new study found that people who cook the majority of their meals at home are healthier and eat less when they dine out.  Those who cooked once a week or less often ate an average of about 2,300 calories per day, but those who cooked dinner six or seven nights a week averaged eating about 2,160 calories  per day.   The researchers said those people also ate fewer fats and sugars.

In an effort to fight breast cancer, more women are choosing to have mastectomies instead of just removing the tumor.  A study from Vanderbilt found the mastectomy rate jumped from 34% in 1998 to 38% in 2011.  The rate of double mastectomies went up as well.  Those numbers are for women who were eligible for breast-conserving surgery, and the rates held for younger women as well.

Why the rise?  Doctors said the options for breast reconstruction have gotten a lot better over the years.
