SOUTH WINDSOR--A family tradition this holiday season will have to be skipped in South Windsor.
Thousands typically pick out their Christmas tree while it's still in the ground at Dzen Tree Farm, and then cut it down themselves.
But the public entrance to the farm is blocked by a new cul de sac on Blue Spruce Road where new homes are going up.
The farm's owner, John Dzen, said his parents sold the property to the developer as part of a 90-acre deal back in 2007.
Dzen said the town suggested that he make his 1,100-foot dirt service road from Barber Hill Road to the 300-car parking lot a public access road. The problem is it would have to be widened and transformed, which would be very costly.
Then there's the issue of wetlands. "You can't just randomly put a bulldozer in a wetlands, it would require quite a bit of engineering," Dzen said. "It would be a very, very expensive proposal."
Dzen said he hopes to have a public access solution by 2015, when he hopes to reopen the tree farm to the public.
