BRIDGEPORT- Fire crews were on the scene of a major structure fire on Berkshire Avenue on Sunday evening.

Upon arrival firefighters found the building at 193 Berkshire Avenue  fully engulfed in flames and threatened two homes nearby.

According to a release by the department, Deputy Fire Chief James Grace said “Firefighter encountered heavy fire volume in the primary house and took immediate action to protect the two exposures” . Chief Grace also went on to say the “Firefighters did an outstanding job preventing the fire from spreading to additional occupied houses.”

Additional fire crews were called in by the Bridgeport fire department in an effort to protect neighboring homes.

In the same release, Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch spoke about the community pulling together and will help support families affected anyway they can. Mayor Finch also thanked the fire crews saying ” It is particularly hard when events like this happen near the holidays. To our firefighters, I want to say another ‘thank you’. Tonight could have been much worse and I know you without hesitation risk your own lives to protect the kids and families of Bridgeport.”

Fire officials say the vacant home where the fire is believed to have started was destroyed. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Fire Marshal’s Office.
