OLD SAYBROOK- Police are investigating after a car crashed into a pond in Old Saybrook that left one person in critical condition  on Friday.

At 3:11 p.m police received a report of occupants trapped inside of a motor vehicle while it was sinking in water near the intersection of Custom Drive and Spencer Plain Road.

Police and fire crews in Old Saybrook responded to the scene near Custom Drive and found a vehicle submerged in the water with  the driver still trapped inside. A state trooper rescued the passenger of the vehicle and brought the person to shore.

Crews on scene entered the water and attempted to reach the trapped victim. A tow truck from a private paving company was used to stabilize the submerged vehicle. A dive team from the Guilford Fire Department also assisted at the scene.

After nineteen minutes, the trapped driver was freed by rescue crews. Police say both victims were transported to Middlesex Medical Center.

The driver was transferred to Yale-New Haven Hospital via LifeStar and is in critical condition tonight. The passenger is in stable condition at Middlesex Medical Center, according to police.

A Old Saybrook police officer involved in the rescue was transported to Middlesex Medical Center and was treated for minor hypothermia.
