HARTFORD--City police have a new beat to walk, and it has nothing to do with nabbing the bad guys.
On Monday, dozens of uniformed Hartford police officers patrolled the halls of Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. It was the kickoff of a new “beat patrol” which will take place every three months with different officers from the department.
"We've been in the city for about seven or eight years now and, you know, it's nice to get out there and see a different aspect of the community and to kind of give back a little bit,” Detective Kenneth Medina said.
The campaign started with members of its Shooting Task Force, as well as Police Chief James Rovella. They went to several rooms including one where little 3-year-old Trey Allen lay recovering from a broken femur.
"A lot of times when the kids see the cops on the streets, they see them arresting someone so it's nice to see the cops come in and give them some cars to play with,” the toddler’s mother, Koisha Knight, said.
Max Daniel, 15, also received a visit from Hartford’s finest. The teen has been in the hospital for several weeks after experiencing a coma from a dirt bike accident.
“It was really nice to meet them all because the company is really nice and supportive and it really helps me get through all this,” Daniel said.
