NEW HAVEN  -- Thousands of parents, educators and elected officials rallied on the New Haven Green on Wednesday, calling for change in Connecticut's school system.

This comes on the heels of a report that came in last month from the Connecticut Coalition for Achievement. The report found that 40,000 Connecticut school children are trapped in failing schools. These tens of thousands of students are not learning to read, write or do math at grade level.

On top of that, 90 percent of those children are from low-income families and children of color who lack access to quality school options, like districts that perform better and/or charter and magnet schools.

That's why 4,000 parents, educators and community leaders are calling for urgent action for what they refer to as a school crisis.

They say change can happen and that this is the year to do something about it.

Mayor Toni Harp and state Rep. Dour McCrory will be in attendance.
