GROTON – A team of students from the Naval Submarine Base tied for first place in an anti smoking  video contest sponsored by the Department of Defense.

Students wrote, shot and edited videos with an anti-smoking message designed to appeal to their peers.

Teams representing  military installations from around the country were competing in the second annual “Fight the Enemy” video contest.  The competition is part of the Department of Defense’s Healthy Base Initiative and in conjunction with the Great American Smokeout.

The video, shot to resemble a first person video game, shows a teen being pressured to smoke and the game player stopping him from lighting up. Team leader Ryan Sweat, 17,  said in a statement that they were inspired by an everyday activity. “We like videogames, especially role playing games like Skyrim,” said Sweat. “We thought this would be a great way to get our message across to today’s youth because many of our friends play games similar to this.”

The Groton group tied a team from Oklahoma.
