HARTFORD – A man was shot in the chest at the West Indian Social Club in Hartford early Monday morning.

Police said a gunman fired several shots inside the club located at 3340 Main St. around 1 a.m. A security guard said he heard about 8 to 10 shots fired and saw one gunman. The male victim was transported to St. Francis Hospital for serious injuries but is now in stable condition. Police are unsure if the victim was targeted or if it was a random act.

Officers tell us they were patrolling the area when they heard gunshots. Officers responded and said it was like a stampede as people tried to get out.

Police have not made any arrests and do not have a suspect(s) in mind.

This is not the first time police have been called out to the West Indian Social Club.

In April of 2012 four people were stabbed and a man fired shots at the club.

In February of 2011 a 19-year-old man was shot and killed after he was confronted on the dance floor.

A search online shows its hours are from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. According to the club website the West Indian Social Club was founded in 1950 and serves as a cultural and social organization to the West Indian community.
