BRIDGEPORT–The former principal of a Bridgeport school has been arrested.

Marilyn Taylor, 46, of Milford, is charged with first-degree larceny. She was the principal at the Dunbar School, a kindergarten through eighth grade school.

According to a press release from Brett Broesder, the city spokesman, an investigation into an audit conducted by the Board of Education revealed irregularities in a financial account for school fundraising.  The audit and investigation showed that more than $10,000 was spent at the Mohegan Sun casino, though no students at the school ever went to the casino for any reason.

The issue was subsequently brought to the attention of police.

Bridgeport Public Schools Superintendent Frances Rabinowitz said she is “incredibly disappointed” with the arrest of Taylor. Taylor is suspended with pay pending the outcome of investigation, as is standard practice, but Rabinowitz says the investigation is at the “end of the process” and Taylor will not be returning to the school.

“We’re working diligently to make sure justice is served,” said city spokesperson Brett Broesder. “And, our top priority is to ensure that kids at Dunbar School – and kids in schools all across the city – are safe, secure, and learning in an environment that is preparing them to one day compete for 21st century jobs.”
