HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A lawyer for former Bridgeport state Sen. Ernest Newton II says he’s subpoenaing Gov. Dannel P. Malloy to testify next week in Newton’s trial for alleged campaign fraud.

Attorney Darnell Crosland said Monday he wants Malloy to testify about the cost of the state’s prosecution of Newton since his arrest two years ago. Crosland says it’s an expensive “witch hunt” taxpayers can’t afford.

Malloy’s office referred questions to the state Attorney General’s Office, which declined to comment Monday.

Newton’s trial is set to start Tuesday in Hartford Superior Court. He’s pleaded not guilty to larceny and campaign finance charges in connection with his failed 2012 campaign for state Senate.

Newton gave up his Senate seat in 2005 before being sentenced to five years in prison for taking a $5,000 bribe.
