HARTFORD-Hartford firefighters battled an apartment fire on Capital Avenue early this morning.

Firefighters say the fire started on the second floor of the four floor apartment around 12:30am. Crews made a fast attack and were able to knock out the fire in 10 minutes.

Six people were rescued by windows with ladders and other were brought out the building through the stairwell.

Five people were taken to St. Francis Hospital for smoke inhalation.

Red Cross relocated some residents and several other residents waited in their cars or the provided CT Transit bus to avoid the cold weather.

Residents have not been given the OK from the Fire Marshall to go back inside. Firefighters are unsure of how many people were inside the apartment where it started.

The cold weather caused a safety hazard for firefighters and pedestrians because of  the icing of everything. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
