NEW HAVEN – Firefighters responded to a fire in apartment A56 of the Winslow-Celentano building at 60 Warren Street early Friday morning.

Police officers responded as well, and assisted with the building’s evacuation, which is owned by the New Haven Housing Authority.

Willie Evans, 56, was discovered inside the burning apartment and rushed to Yale-New Haven Hospital where he was pronounced dead of suspected smoke inhalation.

The initial investigation into the fire did not suggest it had been intentionally set, however, Willie Evans’ autopsy results from the Office of the Chief State’s Medical Examiner revealed that he was a victim of homicide.

Apartment A56, which has been boarded up and secured after the fire, is now being guarded by Police until they can obtain a search warrant.  Arson investigators and detectives hope to learn more during the investigation, but until then, the victim’s manner of death will not be revealed.

As of now, no suspect has been identified. Stay with Fox CT as the story develops.
