HARTFORD-- Temperatures dipped into the single digits in many parts of the state overnight and Saturday morning.
Freezing cold temperatures that are tough for many people to handle.
As the temperatures continue to drop, warming centers are opening up around the state, those centers and shelters are seeing an increase in people trying to escape the bitter cold weather.
Around downtown Hartford it was a scramble to stay out of the cold as a high windchill made temperatures feel well below zero.
"It's really freezing, I feel like I'm in Alaska right now," said Cedric Junior of Bloomfield.
Overnight shelters and warming centers are open all over the state.
In Hartford, McKinney's Men's Shelter on Huyshope Avenue was nearly filled to capacity.
The 150-bed Immaculate Conception shelter on Park Street was nearly filled to capacity as well.
"To come to a warm place like this, not to be in the street. You'd be in the street, you might die out there freezing," said Jose Gonzales, a shelter resident.
Many did stay out in the cold, several people stood bundled while waiting for the bus in downtown Hartford.
"It's really too cold for me right now," said Eline McMaught of Bloomfield.
The city of Hartford continues to clear out from Tuesday's storm, and there's more to come with more snow anticipated for Monday.
Tips to stay safe in cold weather:
- Stay inside if you can, but if you do have to be outside, dress in layers and wear a hat, scarf and gloves.
- Pack extra blankets, hand and foot warmers and bottles of water in your car as a precaution.
