NEW YORK — After 16 years “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” will leave the air.

Comedy Central announced on Tuesday that the host will remain on the show until later this year.

Jon Stewart took over “The Daily Show” in January 1999 from Craig Kilborn, who had launched the show as host three years earlier.

According to the Associated Press, Stewart made the announcement during the taping for tonight’s show.

The news comes as a surprise, especially after Stephen Colbert announced his departure from the network last year.

The network released statement on Twitter. In it it is implied that “The Daily Show” will live on without Stewart at the helm.
