WINDSOR LOCKS -- The town Board of Finance voted unanimously to approve a proposed settlement between it and the former Windsor Locks Police Sergeant, Robert Koistinen.
The settlement would be for the sum of $460,000 stemming from a labor grievance filed with the state after an arbitration panel recently ruled the Town wrongfully terminated Sgt. Koistinen.
Robert Koistinen was terminated after being accused of hampering a 2010 investigation involving his son, former WLPD Officer Michael Koistinen. A jury later acquitted the father of the charges who then sued the town to get his job back.
After years of legal battles, a state arbitration panel ruled Windsor Locks wrongfully terminated Sgt. Koistinen.
The town is now proceeding with a settlement for $460,000 in back pay and fees. Under the terms of the settlement, Sgt. Koistinen would resign from the force.
"We're looking to end the situation that was a sad and tragic event that took place five years ago and we need to put closure to this," said Michael Royston, Chairman of the Windsor Locks Police Commission.
With the 6 - 0 vote in favor of the settlement, the town's Board of Selectmen will call a Town Meeting with an eventual final vote on the settlement in the coming weeks.
