HARTFORD – The Last Man on Earth debuted on Sunday, March 1 at 9 p.m. to a 2.3 rating, making it the No. 1 broadcast for the night. For those of you who forgot to tune in to the one-hour season premiere, spoiler alert.
Will Forte is Phil Miller, the last man on Earth after a virus wipes out the entire population, who spends the first half of the premiere searching for life in the United States and then decorating his chosen homestead with various valuable items lifted during his travels. After a year of solitude, in which he starts talking to balls, bowls with cars, creates a margarita swimming pool, and a toilet pool, Phil decides to off himself out of loneliness. Just as he is about to do the deed, he spots a man (woman)-made cloud of smoke in the distance.
This leads Phil to Carol Pilbasian (Kristen Schaal), the last woman on Earth, who followed Phil’s many “Alive in Tucson” signs left around the country. Unfortunately for Phil, who is both lonely and horny, he and Carol do not exactly hit it off.
The second half of The Last Man on Earth is punctuated with their comically uncomfortable banter as they navigate the pressures of re-populating the Earth amidst their distaste for one another. Future episodes are said to include other actors as well, whether in flash-back, present-day or mirage form.
“There are twists and turns,” Forte recently told E! News. “Other people show up, and we do have flashbacks and dreams, so we do have some exciting people involved. Kristen Schaal, who’s one of the funniest people around, January Jones, Mary Steenburgen just signed on. I don’t want to give away what roles they play, but it’s an amazing group of people.”
The Last Man on Earth airs Sundays at 9:30 p.m. on Fox CT.
