HARTFORD – With the series finale of Glee looming on the horizon, star Melissa Benoist (Marley) has been cast in the upcoming CBS drama show, Supergirl.

The show will follow Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El, who escaped Krypton during its destruction and arrived on Earth to be taken in by a foster family, the Danvers.   The show, produced by Warner Bros., will follow the same tone as the recently rebooted Superman franchise, Man of Steel, starring Henry Cavill.

Benoist won the role against The Originals actress, Claire Holt.  In other versions of Supergirl, Helen Slater played the heroine in the 1984 movie, while Laura Vandervoort portrayed her in the long-running TV series, Smallville.

The series is set to premiere Fall 2016.
