WETHERSFIELD -- Hang on to your steering wheel because the potholes are back with a vengeance.

"We fully expected but are prepared for probably the worst pothole season we've ever seen in our lifetime," said Kevin Nursick, Spokesman for the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

CTDOT officials are warning drivers that this year's Spring season will pack a whallop due to the intense winter and the level of moisture in the ground. Crews are working around the clock to fight the craters that have already formed. "We are working minimum 5 days a week patching potholes, if not six, and seven days a week. On a normal day we've got about 100 crews around the state dealing with potholes," said Nursick.

But the state is currently fighting a losing battle because temperatures are still fluctuating. Nursick believes permanent repairs may not be able to happen until at least May when the ground temperature warms up significantly.

Drivers are warned to slow down and be vigilant of any potholes that develop sudden along roads.

If a driver experiences damage with their vehicle there are ways to file claims, and drivers can contact CTDOT if an incident happened on a state road, but the burden of proof is on the driver.

Drivers also need to be aware of the difference between state roads and local municipal roads if they choose to file a claim.

If a driver does spot a pothole on state roads, contact CTDOT, or contact your local municipality.
