VERNON – Police are investigating a stabbing that happened Monday around 1 p.m.

According to police, two men were stabbed in an apartment complex located at 137 1/2 Vernon Ave.  Both were taken to the hospital, and one is in critical condition. A witness tells Fox CT that one man had an injury on his hand, but the other seemed to be in a much graver condition.

Police said in a press release that the man who was injured on the hand was Irving Mercado, 21. He was identified as a suspect and arrested, and he was charged with assault in the first degree. He’s being held on a $500,000 bond and is due in court March 24, but he’s still being treated at Hartford Hospital so that could be postponed.

Mercado lives at the address the incident occurred at, and he and the victim knew each other.

Police say more charges are expected to be filed against Mercado.

Police say the situation is under control. “At this time we feel that we have identified and located all the involved parties,” said Lt. William Meier of the Vernon Police Department.
