AVON–A Good Friday blood drive was held in Avon today by the town’s volunteer fire and police departments.

It’s the sixth annual Battle of the Badges drive, which is a friendly competition to see which department can bring in the most donors for the American Red Cross.

The fire department has won in years past, but everyone wins if people come out to donate.

According to the Red Cross, just 38 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood, and less than 10 percent of those eligible actually donate.
