NEW HAVEN–Given the long, cold, snowy winter we endured, cabin fever is running rampant. The only known cure: getting outdoors!

Today was opening day at the city owned Alling Memorial Golf Course in New Haven, which is one of only several golf course in Greater New Haven open for the 2015 season.

Fitting that the first golfers our Fox CT crew encountered was a couple from Iceland.

“Yes, we came out of our snow houses to play golf, in Connecticut, said Birgir Bernhoft . For the record, he says, golf season in Iceland is typically June through September. Today was like a June day in their country.

There was still snow visible in spots on the course, which saw over 120 golfers today. However, the reminder of winter was relegated the periphery. One golfer says his cart got stuck in snow on the second hole. But, in no way was he complaining.

“I was Jonesing to play and I can’t believe I waited that long to hit that many bad shots in one day,” chuckled Ron Mitchell of East Haven, who did sink a long putt with our cameras fixed on him on the 18th hole. “I just saved a lot of money with that putt,” Mitchell said, with a grin.

Bill Bowens, of Bethany, says he was thrilled to know he could pull his golf bag out today, despite the damp weather.

“I couldn’t wait to get out today, Bowens said. “It was a great day. And next week, we’re going to Myrtle Beach to golf.”

He had to rub it in, didn’t he.
