NEW HAVEN–A former Navy service member was been accused of exploiting children in a sexual manner.

Adam M. Simpson, 28, is charged with enticing minors to perform sexually explicit acts during online video chats. He’s also accused of receiving and possessing child pornography.

While in the Navy Simpson was stationed in New London.

The indictment says that between January 2013 and November 2013 Simpson used Skype and Omegle to video chat with minors. He asked the to perform sexual acts and act sexually, and he then recorded and saved the videos on his computer to show to others.

Simpson sometimes pretended to be a young boy to encourage and deceive the minors into doing the sexual performances.

He also allegedly downloaded a library full of child pornography.

Simpson was arrested on March 24, and has remained in custody since. He was arraigned on Monday, April 6.

If convicted of enticing the minors, Simpson faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years imprisonment and a maximum sentence of life in prison. For the receipt of child pornography he faces a minimum of 5 years and a maximum of 20 years in prison. For possessing child pornography he faces a maximum sentence of 20 years.

The case was investigated by the Connecticut State Police Computer Crimes Unit, the FBI and the Connecticut Child Exploitation Task Force, which includes federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. The U.S. Naval Criminal Investigative Service also assisted in the investigation.
