NEW HAVEN — Police have fined 19 students at Yale University during a protest calling on the Ivy League school to divest from fossil fuel companies.

About 150 people on Thursday formed a human chain around Woodbridge Hall where Yale President Peter Salovey’s office is located.

About 50 protesters went inside the building and staged a sit-in.

Yale police said they arrested 19 demonstrators and fined them $92 apiece for refusing to leave the building by a 5 p.m. deadline.

While the Yale Police Department and members who were part of the protesting group said the students were arrested, the Yale Daily News reports that a university spokesperson emailed the paper to say that the students were just issued infraction tickets, and were not actually arrested.

The demonstrators are with Fossil Free Yale, which has been pushing the university to divest from fossil fuel companies to address what it calls the social injustices of fossil fuel extraction and burning.

Yale rejected the demands to divest last August, saying it wasn’t the right way to address global warming.
