NEW HAVEN–Two kids were involved in a hit and run accident on Monday afternoon.
Around 4:50 p.m. police and firefighters responded to the intersection of Chapel and Orchard streets on reports that two kids had been hit by a car.
Two kids, aged 4 and 5, were pushing themselves across the intersection in a supermarket shopping cart that had a plastic buggy with toy steering wheels attached. A driver making a turn hit the cart.
At least one adult was with the kids and was in some way impacted by the crash, but its unclear if the adult was pushing the cart or if the car or cart hit him or her.
The children were taken to the hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening. Both were conscious and alert before being taken to the hospital. The adult wasn’t injured.
Police located the car they believe was involved in the incident about 20 minutes after the accident on Waverly Street. The driver was not with the vehicle, but he’s described a 5-foot-6 black man who was wearing red sweatpants and a fitted black sweater.
The car was rented, and police are trying to locate its origin to help identify the suspect.
