HARTFORD — Authorities are calling Connecticut’s anti-distracted driving initiative a success.
The Hartford Courant reports 50 law enforcement agencies across the state have given out about 12,500 citations in the Department of Transportation’s month-long ticketing blitz called “U drive. U text. U pay.”
Undercover officers peered into cars from hidden elevated positions to see if drivers were illegally using their cellphones. If violators were observed, officers would alert patrolmen on the street to pull them over.
DOT officials say April’s campaign shows the public that while this habit may be difficult to break, local law enforcement takes distracted driving seriously.
Officials say the state secured a $2.3 million grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to help launch the campaign.
