NEW HAVEN -Police have made an arrest in the murder of a New Haven store clerk back. Sanja Patel, 39, was shot and killed during a robbery on Monday, April 6.
Thursday morning, just before 11:30 a.m., police arrested Dwayne Sayles, 22, of New Haven. Sayles, who is one of the suspected shooters, was charged with felony murder, murder, criminal possession of a pistol and first-degree robbery. He is currently in custody at Police headquarters.
Two other suspects are already in custody. Leighton Vanderberg, 22, is accused of killing a Bridgeport store own just days later. Jamal Sumler, 23, is also already in police custody for other crimes.
Patel worked at the Pay Rite Food Store/ Citgo Gas Station at 262 Forbes Avenue. Officers say he was shot several times. He was rushed to Yale – New Haven Hospital where he was pronounced dead. At the time of his death, his wife was six months pregnant.
Thursday morning, New Haven Police Detectives secured arrest warrants for the three men they say were involved.
