NEW BRITAIN — A New Britain police officer is being called a hero after rescuing a missing autistic boy from a neighbor’s pool.

Police received a call Wednesday morning that a 4-year-old boy was missing from his home. Police Chief James Wardwell says every available officer was mobilized in the search for the boy, who wandered off while his father was showering.

Officer Frank Surowiec noticed an above-ground pool in the vicinity of the boy’s home with a suspicious pool cover. Surowiec says he heard gurgling when he approached to investigate.

The officer jumped in with his equipment on and pulled the child from the water.

The boy was responsive, but was taken to a hospital as a precaution. He was released two hours later and reunited with his family.
