Encon Police Stepping up Enforcement

HARTFORD  — Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is offering a series of events to inform the public about safe boating practices.

Starting Saturday, the agency will hold events throughout Connecticut to mark National Safe Boating Week. Each day will focus on a theme, such as proper use of life jackets, dressing for water temperatures, responsibilities of operators, how to use sewage pump-out stations, boating under the influence and how to participate safely in towed water sports.

Susan Whalen, the agency’s deputy commissioner, said in Connecticut there are boating opportunities in Long Island Sound and the state’s hundreds of rivers and lakes. She said “all boaters should be properly certified” and take all precautions to be safe and minimize any impact on the state’s natural resources.
