Bad Weather Didn’t Keep Some From Beach This Labor Day

MADISON— Improvements are being planned at Connecticut’s most popular state park.

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has begun work on a new nature center at Hammonasset Beach State Park. The 4,000-square-foot Meigs Point Nature Center will replace the existing outdated facility. It will be a year-round facility for use by the public and educators.

DEEP is also planning to restore storm-damaged facilities at West Beach. The state is constructing a 3,430-square-foot building that includes modern restrooms and changing areas, offices for the Environmental Conservation Police, a first aid station, a concession service area and a covered outdoor dining area.

New facilities, including beach volleyball courts, a children’s play area and paved pedestrian bicycle trail are also planned. A groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday.
