MONROE – An early morning head-on crash closed Route 25 due to a rupture in a tractor-trailer which spilled diesel fuel while the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection coordinates a clean-up effort. The road reopened just before 6 p.m.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the operator of the Malibu crossed over the center line colliding with the tractor-trailer.
The driver, Giovanni Thompson, 20, of Bridgeport, said he must have fallen asleep. he was issued a citation for failure to drive in the right lane.
The operator of the Malibu and a passenger were trapped in the vehicle and were extricated by members of the Stepney, Monroe and Stevenson Volunteer fire departments.
Both occupants of the Malibu and the operator of the tractor trailer truck were transported by ambulance to an area hospital with non-life threatening but serious injuries.
Heating oil from the trailer-tanker was not compromised and is not leaking, according to police. The accident remains under investigation.
