HAMDEN – A 10-year-old boy hid in an upstairs bedroom while a burglary was occurring at his Belmont Street home.
Police said the burglar forced entry through a rear door and once inside, removed a safe, which contained a substantial amount of money and jewelry.
Derrick Hoover, 31, of Reed Street in New Haven, who police said was a friend of the homeowner, was arrested with the assistance of neighbors and passing drivers.
He was found in the possession of a large sum of money and two pieces of jewelry were located near the burglary.
Hoover was charged with second-degree burglary, sixth-degree larceny and interfering with police.
Hoover, was detained on $25,000 bail and appeared in court in Meriden Thursday.
In addition, police said, Hoover was arrested on the strength of three re-arrest warrants, with bonds totaling $200,000.
