NEW HAVEN – Police are investigating after a woman said she awoke to find a man standing in her bedroom. She called police around 2 a.m. Sunday to report a break-in and sexual assault at her first floor apartment on Dwight Street.

The victim says she was disoriented because she had been asleep. Initially, she wasn’t certain if the man was someone she knew. Turns out, he wasn’t.

She said the man told her he had a knife and after threatening her, forced her to perform a sexual act. The victim said she never saw a knife.

The victim said she fought off her attacker which provided her the opportunity to get away. She ran from the room and called out to her roommate. She said the suspect ran away and she locked the door behind him.

The suspect is believed to have entered the apartment through an unlocked back door. Nothing from the apartment was reported stolen.

The victim described her assailant as a black man in his late twenties to early thirties. He stands about 5’08” tall and has an average build. He speaks in a deep voice. He was last seen wearing a dark colored hooded sweatshirt with the hood pulled over a baseball cap and denim jeans.

Any one with any information is asked to call police.
