HARTFORD — The federal government says economic growth last year in Massachusetts and New Hampshire outpaced the expanding national economy, while the rest of New England fell below national gains.

Statistics released Wednesday by the Department of Commerce show the Massachusetts and New Hampshire economies each grew by 2.3 percent in 2014, a fraction more than the 2.2 percent growth in the U.S. economy.

Rhode Island’s economy grew by 1.2 percent, Connecticut and Vermont each posted 0.6 percent gains and Maine’s economy lagged with a 0.2 percent gain.

New England’s $852.5 billion economy grew 1.6 percent. Professional, scientific and technical services were credited for contributing the most to the region’s economic growth.

In contrast, the Southwest’s economy jumped by 4.3 percent and the Rocky Mountain region posted a 3.9 percent gain in 2014.
