DANBURY — Residents are moving forward with expanding Connecticut’s largest high school.

At a time when many schools in surrounding towns are closing, residents voted to give Danbury High School more space, authorizing a more than $53 million expansion.

The plan calls for a new wing with 24 classrooms that will house its freshman academy. The four-story classroom addition and other features will be designed over the summer by the city, including a new automotive shop, free-standing community theater, glass-faced entrance and $6 million smart roof.

Officials hope to have the project completed by fall 2016.

Principal Gary Bocaccio tells the News-Times enrollment is expected to climb from 3,000 to 3,300 in 2020.

Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton says the state education department is expected to pick up 62 percent of the costs.
