BRIDGEPORT--Hundreds turned out on Wednesday night for a community policing event.
The forum comes just one week after a tragic shooting at Trumbull Gardents that left one dead and eight injured at an apartment complex, though the event was planned before the shooting.
The forum was organized by the Congregation Organized for a New Connecticut.
Residents at the event said they want a better relationship with police, saying they're fearful of violence and people who are supposed to protect them. And that was the point; Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch tells told Fox CT that this meeting is part of an effort to continue building a good relationship with the community, which is needed to reduce crime.
"So that you learn what's going on on the street at the ground level and you build relationships when there are difficult times to get through," Finch said.
These meetings aren't new, but they had a different tone after last week's shooting.
As for the investigation into that shooting and the chase to find those responsible, Police Chief Joseph Gaudett says the department just received results from some of the evidence collected at the scene, and the new evidence will shift the direction of their investigation.
"We're getting back the results of some of our evidence and it's taking us in a direction we probably weren't going before," Gaudett said.
