NEW YORK — Urban Outfitters is no stranger to controversy.

The retailer has been criticized for selling a tapestry that looked like a Nazi concentration camp uniform, a Kent State sweatshirt that appeared to have blood splatter and bullet holes on it and a drunk Jesus T-shirt for St. Patrick’s Day.

But Urban Outfitters isn’t just notorious for bad taste. Some customers are annoyed by how the retailer comes up with cute names for everyday objects so it can charge an exorbitant price for them.

And now they’re taking to Twitter to ruthlessly mock the company.

Late Thursday, @wholeyattamoney simply tweeted a photo of something called Maya’s Marble Ponytail Holder on the Urban Outfitters web site that sells for $8.

It’s a hairband and it costs $8 for only 4 of them. Maya is the 2015 fashion equivalent of a 19th century robber baron. You could buy this pack of 16 hairbands for just $3.69 on Amazon.

Shortly after @wholeyattamoney pointed this absurdity out, people started tweeting pictures with the hashtag #UrbanOutfittersbelike. And a hot Twitter trend was born. Early Friday morning, there were more than 50,000 tweets featuring the hashtag.

So what does Urban Outfitters have to say about this? #UrbanOutfittersBeLike not returning calls for comment yet.
