NEW YORK--It's not just the fireworks being closely watched this holiday weekend.

Police in New York are also on the lookout for suspicious objects and activity. "This is the most intense level of concern I've ever seen, maybe, since September 11," said Rep. Peter King.

King is sounding the alarm after a meeting with the FBI and Homeland Security. He says there's a real concern about possible attacks by ISIS, as well as lone wolf extremists, at high-profile locations this weekend.

There's no specific threat, but the NYPD says there's reason to believe something is being planned.

"It's not so much about what we know, but what we don't know," said NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton.

Investigators are especially concerned after five people were recently arrested in the New York area for conspiring to help ISIS, and also because of several attacks overseas.

"The good news is, there's no city in America that has more proactive, preventative type focus than NYC," Bratton said.

Police say there's a lot you won't see, but some of the steps they're taking to target terror include snipers, trash can removals, trash trucks strategically placed and filled with sand, manhole covers welded shut, mobile cameras and plain clothes officers in the crowd.

While this all sounds frightening, police say they're urging to also have a good time. "Come to the fireworks, bring your families. Have a great time," said John Miller, NYPD's deputy commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism.
