HARTFORD — Connecticut officials say more than $131,250 in state rebates have been paid out or committed to consumers who’ve purchased or leased electric vehicles since May 19.

Under the Connecticut Hydrogen and Electric Vehicle Purchase rebate or CHEAPR program, consumers can receive cash rebates of up to $3,000 for purchasing or leasing eligible battery electric, fuel cell electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Rebates have been paid out or committed for 67 eligible vehicles.

The $1 million program was created by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s administration, which has encouraged the use of alternative vehicles. Rebates are offered at three levels, from $750 to $3,000 depending on the type of vehicle.

Jim Fleming, president of the Connecticut Automotive Retailers Association, said the program is a great way to promote electric car sales.
