MILFORD– What is black and white and now thriving in Connecticut? The once endangered osprey population.

The Connecticut Audubon Society has now enlisted the public to help keep the birds happy and healthy, it’s called the “Osprey Nation”. The Audubon Society has invited “citizen scientists” to locate nests and track the progress of the birds also known as fish hawks. Alex Brash, the president of the Connecticut Audubon Society, says already 130 volunteers have joined the Osprey Nation. “What we are doing is bringing in the citizens and our members to get involved,” Brash said.

The Audubon Society states that back in 1972 there were just seven known osprey nests, today the number is approaching 500. “It’s a great comeback story,” Brash exclaimed. “And it’s testament to good conservation science.” Brash said the state DEEP deserves a lot of credit and works closely for the cause of the osprey .

Lindsay Tomaszewski, an Audubon Society intern, and recent member of the Osprey Nation said “we have over 100 stewards going out and monitoring these osprey nests and sending back the information.”

The Audubon Society’s website includes a live web cam of the osprey nest and information on how to volunteer for Osprey Nation.
