HARTFORD — Former Sen. Joe Lieberman has emerged from retirement to urge rejection of the nuclear deal negotiated with Iran.

Lieberman staked his Senate career on a tough U.S. response to terrorism following the 9/11 attacks. He now says Iran is “essentially run by an extremist terrorist government” that he believes can get nuclear weapons under the agreement now before Congress.

He has joined the advisory board of Citizens for a Nuclear Free Iran, which is running ads urging Americans to lobby members of Congress to reject the deal submitted by President Barack Obama.

His successor, Sen. Chris Murphy, supports the Iran deal, though he’s still studying it. Sen. Richard Blumenthal said he remains undecided.

The five members of Connecticut’s all-Democratic delegation in the House of Representatives haven’t taken a position and are reviewing the agreement
